स्कंदमाता माता दुर्गा का पांचवा रूप है। माँ दुर्गा ने देवताओं को सही मार्ग और आशीर्वाद देने के लिए भगवान् शिव से विवाह किया। असुरों और देवताओं के युद्ध होने के दौरान देवताओं को अपना एक मार्ग दर्शक नेता की जरूरत थी। शिव पार्वती जी के पुत्र कार्तिक जिन्हें स्कंद भी कहा जाता है देवताओं के नेता बने।
कार्तिक/स्कंदा को माता पार्वती अपने गोद में बैठा के रखती हैं अपने वाहन सिंह पर बैठे हुए इसलिए उन्हें स्कंदमाता के नाम से पूजा जाता है। स्कंदमाता के पूजा से भक्तों के सभी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति होती है।
स्कंदमाता पहाड़ों पर रहकर सांसारिक जीवों में नवचेतना का निर्माण करने वालीं माता हैं । नवरात्रि में पांचवें दिन इस देवी की पूजा-अर्चना की जाती है। कहते हैं कि इनकी कृपा से मूढ़ भी ज्ञानी हो जाता है।
स्कंद कुमार कार्तिकेय की माता के कारण इन्हें स्कंदमाता नाम से अभिहित किया गया है। इनके विग्रह में भगवान स्कंद बालरूप में इनकी गोद में विराजित हैं।
देवी की चार भुजाएं हैं। ये दाईं तरफ की ऊपर वाली भुजा से स्कंद को गोद में पकड़े हुए हैं। नीचे वाली भुजा में कमल का पुष्प है। बाईं तरफ ऊपर वाली भुजा में वरदमुद्रा में हैं और नीचे वाली भुजा में कमल पुष्प है। इनका वर्ण एकदम शुभ्र है। ये कमल के आसन पर विराजमान रहती हैं। इसीलिए इन्हें पद्मासना भी कहा जाता है। सिंह इनका वाहन है।
शास्त्रों में इनका काफी महत्व बताया गया है। इनकी उपासना से भक्त की सारी इच्छाएं पूरी हो जाती हैं। भक्त को मोक्ष मिलता है। सूर्यमंडल की अधिष्ठात्री देवी होने के कारण इनका उपासक अलौकिक तेज और कांतिमय हो जाता है। अतः मन को एकाग्र रखकर और पवित्र रखकर इस देवी की आराधना करने वाले साधक या भक्त को भवसागर पार करने में कठिनाई नहीं आती है।
उनकी पूजा से मोक्ष का मार्ग सुलभ होता है। यह देवी विद्वानों और सेवकों को पैदा करने वाली शक्ति है। यानी चेतना का निर्माण करने वालीं। कहते हैं कालिदास द्वारा रचित रघुवंशम महाकाव्य और मेघदूत रचनाएं स्कंदमाता की कृपा से ही संभव हुईं।

Skandamata is the fifth form of Mata Durga. Maa Durga married
Lord Shiva to give the right path and blessings to the gods. During the battle
of the Asuras and the Gods, the Gods needed a leader of their own. Kartik, son
of Shiva Parvati Ji, also known as Skanda, became the leader of the gods.
Kartik / Skanda holds Mata Parvati sitting on her lap as her
vehicle is sitting on the lion and hence she is worshiped as Skandamata. The
worship of Skandamata fulfills all the wishes of the devotees.
Skandamata is the Maa who creates a new consciousness in the
worldly living by living in the mountains. Ther goddess is worshiped on the
fifth day in Navratri. It is said that because of her grace, the fool also
becomes knowledgeable.
She is named Skandmata because of the Maa of Skanda
Kumar Karthikeya. In her Deity, Lord Skanda is enthroned in Her lap in Balrup.
The goddess has four arms. She is holding Skanda in her lap
with the upper arm on the right. There is a lotus flower in the lower arm. The
upper arm on the left side is in Varadmudra and the lower arm has a lotus
flower. Her character is very good. She sits on the lotus seat. That is why
they are also called Padmasana. Singh is her vehicle.
Their great importance has been stated in the scriptures.
Her worship fulfills all the wishes of the devotee. The devotee gets salvation.
Being the presiding goddess of Suryamandal, their worshipers become
supernatural fast and radiant. Therefore, a devotee who worships there Goddess by keeping the mind focused and holy does not face any difficulty in crossing Bhavsagar.
Their worship facilitates the path of salvation. The goddess is the power to produce scholars and servants. That is, those who
create consciousness. It is said that Raghuvansham epic and Meghdoot
compositions composed by Kalidasa were possible only by the grace of
Skandamata.
